UP chairman arrested for extortion in Savar
A union parishad chairman of Savar was arrested last night on extortion charges.
The arrestee is Saidur Rahman Sujon (45), chairman of Birulia Union Parishad in Savar and also a member of Savar upazila unit of Awami League, reports our correspondent quoting Saiful Islam, inspector (investigation) of Savar Model Police Station.
The arrest was made following an extortion case filed by one Ashraful Islam who was constructing a five story building at Birulai area of Savar.
According to the case statement, when the plaintiff started construction work of the 4th floor yesterday, Chairman Saidur Rahman Sujon demanded Tk 10 lakh from the plaintiff as extortion.
"Eventually, the owner of the house gave Tk one lakh to Sujon, but he put pressure on the plaintiff for rest the money and forcefully stopped the construction work there," the case statement said.
Later, the owner opted to file the case against the UP chairman.
