Case filed against 122 for attacking cops, vandalising UNO's car
At least 122 people of Charpara village in Sadar upazila have been sued on charges of assaulting police, preventing them from performing duties and vandalising the car of the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) on Tuesday noon.
Moshiur Rahman, sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station filed the case at night. Of the accused, 22, including Sajal Mia and his wife China Begum of the village, are named and the rest are unnamed.
Soon after filing of the case, around 300 male villagers fled the area fearing arrest.
On March 31, Sajal Mia prevented the employees of Palli Bidyut Samity from giving power connections at neighbouring Gazaria village from an electric pole set up in the yard of his house around 2:00pm.
As the employees of Palli Bidyut Samity started giving connections from the pole in the presence of UNO and police, Sajal and a good number of villagers attacked the employees of the samity and the police, triggering a clash between the two sides.
At least 15 people, including three policemen, were injured during the clash. Villagers also vandalised the vehicle of UNO Golam Kibria.
Police fired 27 rounds of blank shots and brought the situation under control, said Majibur Rahman Majumdar, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Police arrested Sajal's wife China from the spot on Tuesday evening and produced her before a court on Wednesday, seeking a seven-day remand.
The court fixed April 6 for hearing on the remand prayer and sent China to jail.
