Buriganga launch capsize: Moyur-2 launch supervisor Salam denied bail

Star Online Report

A virtual court in Dhaka today again rejected the bail petition of Abdus Salam, a supervisor on the vessel Moyur-2, which had collided with another launch in an accident which left 34 dead in the Buriganga on June 29.

He was seeking bail in the case filed over the deaths of the 34.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Moniruzzaman Shikder passed the order after Salam's lawyer Suĺtan Naser submitted a petition to the court seeking bail through an email.

During the hearing, the lawyer argued that his client should be granted bail as his name was not included in the First Information Report (FIR) of the case.

The prosecution opposed the petition saying that a charge had been brought against Salam as he was found guilty.

Salam was arrested on July 6 from a house in South Keraniganj and placed on a three-day remand. He was later sent to jail on expiry of his remandon July 11.

The following day, Shamsul Alam, a sub-inspector of Sadarghat River Police Station, filed the case with Keraniganj South Police Station against seven people, including the owner of the Moyur-2-launch.

Police have arrested all the FIR-named, along with Salam, as a suspect in the case.

The accused in case are: Mosaddek Hanif Swad, his employee Abul Bashar Molla (65), launch master Jakir Hossain (54), engine driver Shipon Hawlader (45), driver Shakil Hasan (28), Sukani Nasir Mridha (40), and Ridoy (24).
