Buriganga launch capsize: 2 staffers of Moyur-2 launch sent to jail

A Dhaka court today rejected the bail petition of Md Ridoy, an employee of Moyur-2 launch, and sent him to jail in connection with a case filed over hitting another launch--Morning Bird--and killing at least 34 people on June 29.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Mishkat Shukrana passed the order after Md Shahidul Alam, a sub-inspector of River Police and also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, produced Ridoy before her court with a forwarding report, court sources said.

In the forwarding report, the IO said the accused was on the launch during the accident and the IO appealed to the court to jail him until the investigation is completed.

On the other hand, the defense sought bail for his client who was pleading innocence.

Meanwhile, another accused Jakir Hossain, assistant master of the same launch was sent to jail after being produced before the court on completion of his three-day remandtoday.

Earlier, two accused--Abul Bashar Mollah, master of the launch and Nasiruddin Mridha, an employee of Moyur-2 launch, gave their confessional statements to magistrates on different dates.

On June 30, Shamsul Alam, a sub-inspector of Sadarghat River Police Station, filed the case with Keraniganj South Police Station against seven people, including the owner of Moyur-2 launch.

Police have so far arrested eight people, including FIR-named seven in connection with the case.
