BSF kills cattle trader, detains youth

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) shot dead a Bangladeshi cattle trader on Charpanka border under Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district early yesterday, reports our correspondent.

The deceased was identified as Tariqul Islam, 35, son of late Yusuf Ali of Jamaipara village in the upazila.

A patrol team of Indian border guards opened fire on some Bangladeshi cattle traders while they were going to India through the border pillar No 16/4 in Charpanka area at around 1:00am, said Lt Col Abu Zafar Sheikh Mohammad Bazlul Haque, commanding officer (CO) of  BGB 9 Battalion in Chapainawabganj.

Tariqul sustained bullets while the remaining cattle traders escaped unhurt. They immediately returned to the border area, took Tariqul to his house at Jamaipara village where he succumbed to his injuries at around 2:30am, the CO said.

BGB strongly condemned the killing and sent a protest note to its Indian counterpart.

On information, police went to Tariqul's house and sent the body to Chapainawabganj Adhunik Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

A company commander level flag meeting between BGB and BSF was held at zero point of the border yesterday morning. In the meeting, BGB strongly protested the killing, sources said

Our Thakurgaon correspondent reported that BSF personnel detained a Bangladeshi youth near Beurjhari border in Baliadangi upazila of the district on Sunday night.

The arrestee is Ejab Uddin, 24, son of late Yunus Ali of Ratnai Maradhar village in the upazila.

Commanding Officer of BGB 30 Battalion in Thakurgaon Lt Col Tusher Bin Yunus told this correspondent over cellphone that a patrol team of BSF picked up Ejab from near pillar No 380 at around 10:00pm while he was returning home from India.

In a company commander-level flag meeting held at the zero point of the border yesterday, BSF said the Bangladeshi youth was arrested with 100 bottles of phensidyl inside the Indian territory and later handed over to Goalpukur Police Station in Uttar Dinajpur district of Paschimbanga on charge of intrusion and drug peddling.
