Beating UP member: Chairman, son sent to jail in Panchagarh
The chairman of Chengthihajradanga union parishad in Panchagarh's Debiganj upazila and his son were sent to jail today in a case filed over beating a member of the parishad.
Panchagarh Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Matiur Rahman passed the order after the accused -- Anil Chandra Roy, 52, chairman of the union parishad, his son Manik Chandra Roy, 35, and another Kanai Chandra Sen, 38, -- appeared before the court seeking bail.
According to the case statement, UP member Shahidul Islam had an altercation with the chairman while talking about a development project at the latter's office in Natunhat Bazar area on July 25.
At one point, Chairman Anil Chandra Roy started beating Shahidul. Anil's son Monik Chandra Roy also hit the UP member on the head with an iron rod and their accomplice Kanai Chandra Sen grabbed Shahidul's throat. The beating left Shahidul critically injured, as per the case statement.
On August 18, Shahidul filed the lawsuit against the trio with the court.
Later, taking cognizance of the case, the court directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate it and directed the accused to appear before the court on December 22.
