Another sex worker given formal burial

Another sex worker in Rajbari's Daulatdia was buried following formal Islamic funeral customs today.

Nilu Parvin, 48, died of a cardiac arrest on February 21, said Ashikur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Daulatdia Police Station.

She was buried at a graveyard adjacent to the brothel after a namaz-e-janaza at 2:00pm, the OC told our Faridpur correspondent.

Nilu is the third sex worker to receive a formal Islamic burial, something considered a taboo in Bangladesh given their profession, said Jhumur Begum, president of Oshohay Nari Oikya Shanghathan, a local rights organisation.

Hamida Begum was the first sex worker in Daulatdia to receive a formal Islamic burial on February 2, followed by Rina Begum, 55, on February 20.

"It was our dream to get proper burial as a human being and the dream has come true for us. Now we are very happy," said Nilu's younger sister Runa Parvin, who followed her sister into the trade.
