35 Jamaat-Shibir men among 79 arrested

At least 79 people including 35 Jamaat-Shibir men were held in Nilphamari, Bogra, Jhenidah, Satkhira and Chapainawabganj yesterday and the day before.

Police in separate drives arrested 14 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir in Dimla upazila of Nilphamari on Sunday night, reports our correspondent.

The arrestees include Aminur Rahman, 42, Belal Hossain, 32, Abdus Sobhan, 35, Abdur Rashid, 30, Akhter Ali, 50, Mintu Mia, 25, Nazrul Huq, 45, and Abdur Noor, 24.

They were arrested in several cases, said Superintendent of Police Zakir Hossain.

In Bogra, two local Jamaat leaders were held in Kahaloo upazila of the district the same day, reports our correspondent.

The arrestees are Abdul Haque, 57, nayebe ameer of the district unit of Jamaat, and its Muruil union unit ameer Abdul Jalil, 54.

They were arrested on sabotage charge, said Shumit Kumar Kundu, officer-in-charge of Kahaloo Police Station. 

Away in Jhenidah, police arrested two Jamaat activists with five petrol bombs at Baliakandor village in Sadar upazila of the district yesterday.

The arrestees are Younus Ali, 52, son of Tarek Mandol, and Nazrul Islam, 38, son of Eakub Ali of the village, reports our correspondent. 

Hasan Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, confirmed the incident.

According to our Chapainawabganj correspondent, police arrested at least 24 people, including two Jamaat men, in five upazilas of the district in the last two days.

The arrestees include Rafiqul Islam, 48, publicity secretary of Nachole upazila unit of Jamaat.

They were arrested in several cases, said police.

In Satkhira, a team of joint force arrested 37 people, including 15 activists of Jamaat-Shibir, on various charges in different parts of the district yesterday and the day before, reports UNB.

A team of joint force, comprising police, Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh, conducted the drive in eight upazilas of the district and arrested the 37 people, said Sub-Inspector of the Special Branch of Satkhira police Kamal Hossain.

Among the arrestees, 10 are from Sadar, six from Kolaroa, three from Tala, four from Kaliganj, four from Shyamnagar, two from Ashashuni, two from Debhata, and six from Patkelghata upazilas.
