2 killed in Cox’s Bazar, Cumilla ‘gunfights’

Two alleged robbers, including a Rohingya, were killed in separate “gunfights” with law enforcers in Cox’s Bazar and Cumilla early today.

In Cox’s Bazar, Nurul Amin, 43, was killed in a gunfight between robbers and Rapid Action Battalion members at Pashchim Leda Nurali para in Hnila union around 3:00am, said Lieutenant Md Mirza Shahed Mahtab, Rab-15 Teknaf camp commander.   

A long gun, one shooter gun, four cartridges, three bullet caps, a wallet, a mobile and four SIMs of Myanmar were recovered from the scene, our Cox’s Bazar correspondent reports, quoting the Rab official.

The robbers opened fire when a Rab team, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid at their den in a hill, leaving two elite force members – Lance Nayek Azharul Islam and Sipahi Md Sohel – injured, said the camp commander.

The Rab members, in self-defence, also fired shots, ensuing the “gunfight”, he added.

After the robbers managed to flee the scene, the Rab men found bullet-hit Nurul on the spot and sent him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, where he later died.

The two injured Rab members were discharged from hospital after receiving primary treatment.

In Cumilla, a suspected robber was killed in a shootout with police at Poschim Singho in Burichang upazila around 2:00am, our Cumilla correspondent reports, quoting Mojammel Haq, officer in-charge of Burichang Police Station.

The deceased, Majarul Islam, 35, from Debidwar upazila, was a highway robber who was involved with the murder of two businessmen that took place at Kangsonagar on Cumilla-Sylhet highway and in Chandina on Dhaka-Chattogram highway recently, the OC said.

The “gunfight” took place when Burichang police raided Paschim Singho area on information that a gang of robbers was preparing for a robbery, the police official added.

Majarul came in the line of fire and was hit by a bullet. He was rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, he added.

The OC said six police members, including Inspector Nittananda Shaha, were injured during the operation.
