2 cops closed over officer’s death in Chandpur

Two police officials have been closed in Chandpur over death of another police officer who was found dead after a clash with fishermen on Meghna.

Those closed were Haimchar Police Station’s Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Suman Sarkar and Constable Shahadat Hossain, our local correspondent reports.

They were closed late last night on charges of negligence in discharging duty, said Jihadul Kabir, superintendent of police in Chandpur district.

Deceased’s wife filed a case with the Haimchar Police Station naming around 30-35 unnamed fishermen and 15 named others over her husband’s death.

HOW DID THE POLICE OFFICIAL DIE?

The body of Mosharraf Hossain,32, was recovered around 11:00am from the river in Hizla upazila of Barishal on April 28. He went missing on Friday from Chandpur.

Mosharraf, a constable of Haimchar Police Station, was in his uniform when he fell into the river but police recovered his naked body.   

While conducting a drive against a wanted criminal in the river on Friday night, Mosharraf and his team members noticed that some fishermen were illegally catching jatka (hilsa fry less than 10 inches long).

Then, they conducted another drive against the illegal fishing. Sensing their presence, the fishermen attacked the police team with their oars, ensuing a clash.

Mosharraf fell into the river during the clash and was reported missing since then.
