10 Swechchhasebak League men injured, 4 arrested
At least 10 people were injured in a clash between two factions of Swechchhasebak League over formation of the committee of Kishoreganj upazila unit in the district yesterday.
Police also arrested four supporters of the two rival groups on the spot. The arrestees are Firoz Rashid, Aktaruzzaman Jibon, Hizbullah Rahman Dalim and Kabir Hossain.
Locals said council of the party was held on September 14 in the upazila town where Potiram Chandra Roy and Rashidul Islam Babu contested for the post of president.
On Saturday night, the district committee announced the committee, declaring Potiram Chandra Roy as president and Golam Robbani as secretary, but the rival group, led by Rashidul Islam Babu, rejected the new body.
On the following day, the men of Babu brought out a procession in the upazila town, chanting slogans demanding dissolution of the committee.
At one stage, supporters of Potiram attacked the processionists, triggering a clash that left 10 people from both sides injured.
Of the injured, Sohel Rana and Abdul Halim were admitted to the upazila health complex.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
They also arrested the four on the spot, said Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kishoreganj Police Station.
Contacted, Babu and Potiram Chandra Roy blamed each other for the incident.
