2 villages flooded in Bagerhat, crops damaged

Two villages of Bagerhat’s Shoronkhola upazila were flooded after an embankment of Water Development Board (WDB) collapsed during Fani cyclone. 

Water rose up to two feet over the ground in Bagi and Dashgram village, inundating around 200 houses, our local correspondent reports this afternoon.

Fani: Bangladesh now out of danger

Dilip Sarkar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shoronkhola Police Station, confirmed The Daily Star of the latest flood report and said no fatalities were reported yet.

Sabur Ali, a resident of Bagi village, told The Daily Star that his house is under water. “I tried to go back home, but returned to cyclone shelter.”

Anwara Begum of the same village said they couldn’t eat or drink water as her house was under water. “There is a huge crisis of drinkable water here.”

Meanwhile, crops were ruined in two other upazilas of Bagerhat – Morolganj and Kachua – due to rain influenced by the cyclone Fani. Farmers were seen busy salvaging whatever crop they could save.

Aftab Uddin, deputy director of Bagerhat Agricultural Department, said: “25% of the entire paddy of this season are yet to be harvested. They are under water now.”

But the total amount of loss of crops due to Fani will be known afterwards, the official added.
