Kurigram inspector becomes 20th police personnel to die with Covid-19
The death toll from Covid-19 in Bangladesh Police now stands at 20 as another member of the force died from the infection yesterday.
The victim was identified as Md Abdul Jalil, 55, an inspector of Kurigram district police.
Jalil breathed his last around 1:30pm while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College hospital of Bogura, according to a statement of Police Headquarters (PHQ).
Hailing from Dipchadpur village in Naogaon district, inspector Jalil left behind his wife and two sons. His was buried at native village in accordance with health guidelines in the presence of police high-ups of the district.
Meanwhile, the total number of police personnel infected with Covid-19 across the country rose to 6,826, according to a PHQ tally.
Of those infected, 1,904 are from Dhaka Metropolitan Police, it added.
Police officials said the number of infected among police is on the rise as it is quite difficult for law enforcers to carry out their duties without coming into regular contact with people.
On the other hand, 3,707 police personnel have recovered so far, with many having already rejoined their duties, said officials.
Md Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general of PHQ, said they have taken all preventive measures to contain spread of coronavirus among police personnel.
