India records highest number of Covid-19 deaths in a day
In a massive spike, India reported more than 2,003 coronavirus deaths in 24 hours for the first time with Maharashtra and Delhi accounting for most of them.
With this, the total death count of the country has gone up to 11,903, reports our New Delhi correspondent quoting health ministry data.
The country has so far recorded 3,54,065 coronavirus cases with 10,974 new infections in the last 24 hours.
A total of 1,86,935 patients have so far recovered taking the recovery rate to 52.79 percent.
The state of Maharashtra has the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the country. The number of fatalities across the western state and its capital Mumbai, went up sharply on Tuesday night as the records were updated with 1,328 new cases.
Mumbai now has 3,167 coronavirus-linked deaths, records show. Maharashtra's total toll is 5,537, including 81 new deaths reported on Tuesday.
Delhi's toll increased by 437 to 1,837 on Tuesday night.
With rising Covid-19 cases in Delhi, there is an acute shortage of beds in hospitals forcing the authorities to press 500 train coaches to act as quarantine centres in Anand Vihar Railway Station in east Delhi.
