Dr AKM Fazlul Haq dies of Covid-19

Dr AKM Fazlul Haq, a professor of Ophthalmology at ZH Sikder Women's Medical College, died this evening after he was diagnosed with Covid-19.

Nirupam Das, chief administrator of Bangladesh Doctors Foundation, confirmed this to The Daily Star.

Dr Fazlul Haq died around 6:45pm while undergoing treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka, Nirupam Das said.

He was shifted to the intensive care unit of the hospital after his oxygen saturation fell yesterday. Today, his hypoxia worsened and he suffered a massive cardiac arrest and could not be revived, Nirupam also said.

Dr Fazlul Haq had a successful career in public service under the health ministry. Later, he ended his career as a teacher at ZH Sikder Women's Medical College.

A freedom fighter in the Liberation War, Dr Haq was captured and tortured by Pakistani forces in 1971.
