Try Taher's "murderers"

A daylong fair featuring the memorabilia of Col Abu Taher Bir Uttam was held on the Dhaka University campus yesterday celebrating the 77th birth anniversary of the freedom fighter.

Taher Mela was organised on Swaparjito Swadhinata premises by Col Taher Sangsad and inaugurated by Taher's wife Lutfa Taher.

The displayed articles include an artificial leg, crutches, military uniforms, belts, pants, shirts, a wristwatch, photographs, dresses, audio CDs, biography, documents, souvenirs, and newspaper clippings. Books written on him and on the Liberation War were also sold.

An art competition was held on the TSC premises.

At a discussion, speakers said Taher's execution was a cold-blooded murder, and it was the state's responsibility to try his "murderers".

Dr Anwar Hossain, younger brother of Taher and professor of Dhaka University, delivered the keynote speech titled "Phirey Dekha 7 November" (Looking back at November 7).

Taher was hanged for mutiny and treason on July 21, 1976, but in March 2011 the High Court declared the trial illegal and said Zia masterminded the "cold-blooded murder of Taher".
