Tribunal seeks probe report Jan 4

International Crimes Tribunal-1 yesterday directed prosecutors to submit on January 4 an investigation report, if there is any, over the alleged involvement of three men of Mymensingh's Phulbaria upazila in crimes committed in the district during the 1971 Liberation War.

Meanwhile, the tribunal recorded the testimonies and cross-examination of the eighth and ninth prosecution witness in the case against five Kishoreganj "Razakars" facing seven charges over involvement in crimes committed in 1971.

Prosecutors submitted a progress report and had sought two months' time from the three-member tribunal led by Justice Anwarul Haque to complete the probe against the Mymensingh men.

Arrested hours after the tribunal issued a warrant on August 11, Hazi Amjad Ali died on September 4 due to cardiac complications while Riaz Uddin Fakir is in police custody. Wajuddin is on the run.

The tribunal's investigation agency says Amjad was an adviser of anti-liberation Razakar Bahini in Phulbaria while Riaz an Al-Badr commander and Wajuddin a Razakar.

Investigations, initiated in October 2014, found the three's "involvement" in the killing of at least 50 people, it adds.

KISHOREGANJ 'RAZAKARS'

Like several others before them, Abdus Salam and Abdul Goni also linked the five  to the killing of at least nine people in the district in November.

Gazi Abdul Mannan, 88, is the alleged commander of Karimganj Razakar camp, and the rest are alleged Razakars Nasiruddin Ahmed, 62, and his brother Shamsuddin Ahmed, 60, Hafiz Uddin, 66, and Azharul Islam, 60. Shamsuddin is now in jail while the rest on the run.

State appointed defence counsel Abdus Shukur Khan completed the cross examination before the tribunal adjourned proceedings until November 23.
