Top criminal Emon jailed for 17 years for illegal arms possession

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced Sanjidul Hassan Emon, one of the 23 top listed criminals, to 17 years' rigorous imprisonment in a case filed in 2008 for possessing illegal arms and ammunition.
This is the first time that a court handed down a sentence to Emon, an accused in a dozen of cases including the film actor Sohel Chowdhury murder case. 
The BNP-led four-party alliance government on December 27, 2001 announced a list of 23 most wanted criminals, Emon was one of them.
Following the declaration, Emon went into hiding in India. But Indian police arrested him and handed him over to Bangladesh government. 
Based on Emon's information, Bangladeshi police recovered a foreign revolver and 33 bullets from a market in the capital's Rayerbagh on March 16, 2008.
Later, an arms case was filed against him and the police submitted a charge sheet against Emon on April 5, 2008.
