Sylhet court starts hearing witnesses

A  Sylhet court yesterday started trial of four accused in a case for killing 9-year-old schoolboy   Abu Sayeed.

Special Tribunal Public Prosecutor Abdul Malek said Judge Abdur Rashid of Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal started recording deposition of victim's father Abdul Matin and testimonies of witnesses.

The tribunal will hear all the 37 witnesses, he added.

The four against whom charges were framed are Ebadur Rahman, constable of Airport Police Station, Mahib Hossain Masum, publicity secretary of the Sylhet district unit of Olama League, Abdur Rakib, general secretary of the district Olama League, and Ataur Rahman Geda, a police informant.

Mosharraf Hossain, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Kotwali Police Station and also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet against them to Sylhet Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court.

Of them, Mahib, who had been absconding, surrendered before the court on November 10.

Ebadur, Rakib and Geda were arrested after the incident and they gave confessional statements admitting their involvement in kidnapping and killing Sayeed.

On March 11, they abducted Sayeed, a fourth grader at Hazi Shahmeer Primary School, for a ransom of Tk 5 lakh and later killed him. Police on March 14 recovered Sayeed's body wrapped in sacks from Ebadur's house at Jharnapar in the city.
