Suspended Savar municipality mayor arrested

Suspended Savar municipality mayor Alhaj Md Refatullah, also president of Bangladesh Nationalists Party (BNP)'s Savar municipality unit, was arrested yesterday in Genda of Savar, outside the capital, over vandalising and torching vehicles during hartals.

Savar Model police also arrested Md Nazim Uddin, vice-president of the unit, in the same house on similar charges.

Police arrested Refatullah in four cases in which arrest warrants had been issued. Refatullah has been planning acts of sabotage since he secured bail in 12 cases out of 18 filed on different charges, said police.

Refatullah recently was suspended from his mayoral post in cases over Rana Plaza collapse on April 23, 2013 which killed over 1,100 people.
