Students of newly established state-run Rangamati Medical College may have to take classes at Chittagong Medical College or other such colleges on a temporary basis as classes in the new college have not started yet, said Prof Tipu Sultan, principal of the college, yesterday.

Talking to The Daily Star, the principal said the health ministry was supposed to take a final decision regarding start of classes on March 3 but they did not.

He said ministry officials informed him that a decision would be taken within a few days.

Meanwhile, the students demanded start of classes immediately.

A total of 51 students who were admitted into the college fear facing a session jam as classes have not yet started although they were supposed to start on January 11.

They formed a human chain in front of Chittagong Press Club to press home their demand.

Academic activities have not yet started as there has been resistance from the indigenous communities who do not want a medical college in Rangamati.

Already people of the indigenous communities clashed with Bangalee settlers on January 10 when the college was inaugurated, said students at the human chain.
