Six remanded again in Ctg

A Chittagong court yesterday remanded six people for different periods in connection with the recent seizure of liquid cocaine at Chittagong Port.

Police wanted to interrogate each of them for 10 days but Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Rahamat Ali granted five days each for Golam Mostafa Sohel, Mehedi Alam and Saiful Islam and two days each for AK Azad, Atiqur Rahman and Mostafa Kamal, said Public Prosecutor (PP) Fakhruddin Chowdhury.

The PP said for getting secrets and collecting the names and addresses of the criminals involved in bringing the consignment of liquid cocaine, more interrogation was needed.

As per the law, an accused cannot be remanded for more than 15 days in succession.

Earlier, Sohel, Saiful and Mehedi were interrogated for 10 days each and the rest for 13 days each, said the PP.

On June 6, on information from detectives, Customs Intelligence officials sealed off a container carrying 107 barrels of sunflower oil at Chittagong Port.

Two days later, on June 8, the container was opened in the presence of different agencies. Later, the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate sent the samples of sunflower oil to two laboratories in Dhaka. On June 27, after laboratory examinations in the capital, liquid cocaine was detected in the sample of one barrel.

On the same day, police filed a case against two people under the Narcotics Control Act with Bandar police Station. But police later arrested four more based on the information the two gave.
