Shawkat bailed, but not released
The High Court yesterday granted ad-interim bail to BNP chairperson's adviser Shawkat Mahmud for six months in three arson cases filed on January 10, 30 and February 3 on charge of torching vehicles during BNP-led alliance's anti-government agitation.
The HC also issued three rules upon the government to explain in four weeks why Shawkat, also former president of Jatiya Press Club, it should not be granted regular bail. Lawyer M Masud Rana said his client cannot be released from the jail as he has been arrested in 15 more cases.
