Schoolteacher suspended for enforcing corporal punishment

A schoolteacher of Rouha Government Primary School in Dhamrai was suspended yesterday for enforcing corporal punishment on students.

Md Dawlatur Rahman Khan, upazila primary education officer of Dhamrai, said the teacher, Md Mohiuddin, was suspended after he beat at least eight students.

Locals of Suapur union in Dhamrai claimed at least 20 students sustained injuries when the teacher beat them for not submitting their math paper on time in class on Tuesday. The students received first aid in different clinics. 

Md Rizaul Haque, officer-in-charge of Dhamrai Police Station, said locals handed over the schoolteacher to police after a mob beating following the incident.

"No case was filed in this connection yet," he said. In 2011, the High Court declared all types of corporal punishment in schools "illegal and unconstitutional".

If a person is convicted of committing the offence, he or she will be awarded up to five years imprisonment or fined Tk 1 lakh or both.
