SC resumes hearing Nizami's appeal against death penalty

After a 68-day recess, the Supreme Court yesterday resumed the hearing of the appeal filed by condemned war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami, challenging the verdict that sentenced him to death.

Nizami's lawyer SM Shahjahan presented prosecution witnesses' statements about the charge of committing conspiracy, murder, rape and deportation of the villagers of Baousgari, Ruposhi and Demra in Pabna in 1971.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar also fixed today for its third's hearing.

International Crimes Tribunal-1 on October 29 last year sentence him to death on four charges of war crimes, including murdering of intellectuals. The 71-year-old was also sentenced to life imprisonment on four other charges.
