The High Court yesterday granted ad-interim bail for six months to sacked mayor of Gazipur City Corporation MA Mannan in two violence cases.

The HC bench of Justice Farid Ahmed and Justice KM Kamrul Kader also issued two rules upon the government to explain in four weeks why Mannan should not be granted regular bail in the cases after hearing two bail petitions filed by Mannan, seeking bail in the cases.

Police filed the cases against him with Tongi and Kaliakoir Police Stations on December 31 last year in connection with his alleged involvement in violence during the indefinite blockades sponsored by the BNP-Jamaat led 20-party alliance.

He was sacked a few months ago for having too many criminal cases against him.

Mannan's lawyer M Masud Rana told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar to his client's release from jail following the HC orders as his client, who was arrested in February 11, this year, got bail in all the 17 cases against him.
