Rupali Bank asked to pay Tk 6 lakh to victim's family

A Dhaka court yesterday ordered the managing director of Rupali Bank Ltd to pay Tk 6 lakh as compensation to the family of deceased Mohammad Niazuddin against the victim's death following a road accident in 1996.

Judge Utpal Bhattacharjee of the Second Joint District Judge's Court of Dhaka issued the order following a damage suit filed by the victim before his death.

The court directed the bank to pay the money in 90 days from the date of delivery of this verdict. In default, the family will realise the money following a legal process.

Niazuddin was injured when a staff bus of Rupali Bank hit him in front of Modhumita Cinema Hall in the capital's Motijheel about 4:30pm on February 12, 1996, while he was pulling his rickshaw with passengers.

On August 26, 1996, Niazuddin filed the damage suit against three people, including the managing director and driver of the bank, claiming Tk 6 as compensation.

Niazuddin succumbed to his injuries on September 22, 2009 while undergoing treatment. Before filing the lawsuit, Niazuddin served legal notices twice through his lawyer asking the bank to pay the compensation but the bank did not reply.

This is the second judgment of such damage suit filed for road accidents.  

On March 20, 2005, another Dhaka court ordered Bangladesh Beverage Industries Ltd (BBIL) to pay Tk 3.52 crore as compensation to the family of deceased Mozammel Hossain Montu, former news editor of the daily Sangbad. 

Montu was injured when a mini truck of BBIL hit him at Kakrail in the capital on December 3, 1989. He succumbed to his injuries on December 16 the same year.
