Staff Correspondent, Ctg

Awami League-backed Chittagong city mayor candidate AZM Nasir Uddin yesterday appeared before a court in a case filed against him 21 years back, on the charge of attempting to murder a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

The case had been stayed since 1994 after an accused filed a revision petition with the High Court, and the HC vacated the stay order in March 2014.

However, the order reached the Chittagong District and Sessions Judge's court on March 3 this year, and the court later scheduled the proceeding for yesterday, said court sources. The sources added that the delay occurred because of official modalities. On January 24, 1993, then BCL leader Sufian Siddique was attacked at an AL meeting in Chittagong city. Later he sued 18 people including AZM Nasir, also a then BCL leader, for attempted murder.

Public Prosecutor Abul Hasem said the court resumed the cross-examination of the complainant yesterday before adjourning proceedings till May 4. Nasir got bail on April 1.
