Lawyers demand Circuit bench of HC in Ctg

Lawyers in Chittagong city yesterday demanded that a Circuit Bench of the High Court (HC) be established in the port city for faster and easier disposal of cases.

Under the banner of "High Court Circuit Bench Bastabayan Parishad", the lawyers made the demand at a press conference at Chittagong Press Club.

The government's plan for quicker disposal of cases cannot be realised if a Circuit Bench of the HC is not established in the port city, said Advocate Abul Hasem, convener of the parishad. He mentioned that out of 28 lakh cases in courts, 1.75 lakh were filed in Chittagong city.

People living in Chittagong city face problems as they have to go to the capital for filing appeals with the HC, said Hasem.      

Bar Council member Advocate Kabir Chowdhury read out a written statement at the conference.

The lawyers also announced numerous programmes, including seminars and human chains, to press home their demand.
