Judiciary working independently
Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha yesterday in Chittagong University said the judiciary of the country is fully independent now.
Judges are delivering verdicts only after scrutinising the false and truth and without any interference from higher authorities or any ministry, Sinha said while inaugurating a modern academic building of the law faculty of CU as chief guest.
In foreign countries, most of the elected lawmakers are law students. It is an irony that in Bangladesh only two to three percent of the lawmakers are from law background while 80 percent of them are businessmen, he added.
People from law background should come forward for upholding the rule of law and protecting democracy, he added.
The new law building named "AK Khan Ain Anushad Bhaban", built on 1.5 acres of land with the fund of Tk 21 crore of AK Khan Foundation, has an administrative block,an academic block, a lecture gallery, a student centre and an auditorium.
Designed by architect Bashirul Haq, the building, besides having all modern facilities, also has a symbolic court room for students. The building has Wi-Fi, generator and water purification facilities.
Mizanur Rahman Khan, chairman of National Human Rights Commission, Prof Shah Alam, member of Bangladesh Law Commission, Salahuddin Kasem Khan, trustee secretary of the foundation, and law faculty Dean Prof Abdullah Al Faruque also spoke at the event which was presided over by CU Vice Chancellor Prof Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury.
