ICT grants quizzing of suspect brothers

Two Habiganj brothers suspected of committing war crimes during the 1971 Liberation War can be interrogated by the International Crimes Tribunals' investigation agency in its Dhanmondi "Safe House" on March 16 for six hours from 10:00am.

On April 16, the prosecution has to submit an investigation report, if any, to International Crimes Tribunal-2 while the jail authorities a report on compliance with the tribunal's order to provide treatment to the suspects.

Arrested on February 10, Mahibur Rahman Boromian, 70, former chairman of Baniachang upazila's Khagaura union parishad; and Majibur Rahman Angur Mian, 65, the incumbent chairman, have been kept in a jail. 

The brothers allegedly formed the Razakar Bahini, the Pakistani occupation army's auxiliary force, in their area and used to hand over freedom fighters to the army.

The two-member tribunal led by Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah with Justice Md Shahinur Islam granted the permission and passed the orders yesterday hearing three petitions, two of the prosecution and one of the defence.

The agency, through prosecutor Sultan Mahmud Simon, sought the interrogation consent and the prosecution itself, submitting a progress report, more time for investigations.

Defence lawyer Nazrul Islam sought the treatment citing Mahibur's eye problems and Majibur's diabetes and other complications.

Tribunal Chairman Justice Obaidul Hassan was on leave.
