Some 15 second-year physics students, allegedly Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists, vandalised a door and six windows of their Chittagong University (CU) department after an academic committee denied letting them retake their final exam which they had failed.

Meanwhile, three chemistry students had to be hospitalised after another group of alleged BCL activists beat them up in front of the arts and humanities faculty claiming they were Islami Chhatra Shibir activists.

Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury confirmed the accused were BCL activists but CU BCL President Mohammad Alamgir Tipu refuted their involvement with the pro-ruling party's student organisation.

The physics department chairperson, Prof Mihir Kumar, said they did not take any steps against the BCL activists, rather sent some recommendations to the proctor's office.

Rescued by a proctorial body, Nazmul Hasan Tusher, Abu Bakar Siddique and Ujjamel Hoque Bulbul have been admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. They could not be contacted for comment.

The proctor said they would take steps after an investigation.
