DU suspends 3 over question leak, cheating

Dhaka University yesterday suspended three students, two for supplying a hi-tech electronic device to a candidate for cheating in the admission test and the other for his involvement with the question leak.

The students are Farhad Uddin Mahmud, a third-year student of information technology; SM Imrul Kayes Shuvo, a third-year student of physics; and Sohel, a third year student of oriental arts. All three fled halls.

Meanwhile, detectives unveiled the misdeeds of a question paper leak syndicate at a press conference yesterday.   

Detectives said the 17 youths, who were arrested earlier for allegedly leaking the admission test questions of Dhaka University and Jagannath University, had taken up to Tk 5 lakh from each candidate in exchange for supplying questions.

For making sure the candidates pay the money, they kept students' original transcripts, detectives told the press conference at DMP Media Centre.

The gang sent question paper links through Facebook, WhatsApp, and other social media, Deputy Commissioner (North) Sheikh Nazmul Alam of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told the briefing. The information was found through quizzing of the arrestees.

Detectives arrested the 17 at Tajgaon and Dholaikhal in the capital from Thursday night to Friday evening.

A Dhaka court yesterday remanded them for three days each in a case filed with Tajgaon Police Station.    

In the incident of Dhaka University, Farhad and Shuvo supplied a high-tech electronic device to Hasibul Hasan Shanto, an admission seeker, who was caught on Friday during the Ka unit test around 10:45am at Mohammadpur Model School.

With the device, which looks like a regular credit card but works like a mobile phone, Shanto was receiving answers from outside, the invigilator caught him. The two DU students made a deal of taking Tk 10,000 from Shanto for the device and Tk 5 lakh for supplying answers through the device.

DU Proctor AM Amzad said the process of their expulsion was underway. The first two students were involved with University Coaching Centre (UCC), he added.
