DAD Tauhidul rightly sentenced

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam yesterday said the lower court rightly sentenced erstwhile Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) deputy assistant director Tauhidul Alam for he was involved in killing Major Asad, and in the conspiracy of other killings during the 2009 BDR carnage.

Tauhidul gave false information to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after leading a BDR delegation to a meeting in her residence in the afternoon of February 25, 2009, he told a special High Court bench. Tauhidul told Hasina that high BDR officials, who were from the army, and their family members were well although many of them had already been killed by the jawans, said Mahbubey.

The bench fixed today for resumption of hearing arguments in the 255 appeals, filed individually and collectively, by 567 convicts of the carnage case.

Seventy-four people, including 57 army officials, were slain in the BDR mutiny on February 25-26, 2009 at the force's Pilkhana headquarters in Dhaka.

In November 2013, a Dhaka court sentenced 150 soldiers of BDR, now Border Guard Bangladesh, and two civilians to death, and jailed 161 for life for their involvement. It also gave rigorous imprisonment, ranging from three to 10 years, to 256, mostly BDR soldiers. The remaining 277 were acquitted. A total of 844 people, 823 of them BDR personnel, stood trial in Bangladesh's biggest criminal case in terms of the number of accused and convicts.
