Cultural programme protesting fundamentalism at Dhaka University
A group of students of Dhaka University have organised a cultural programme protesting fundamentalism and extremism in the country.
The event titled "Dhormo Byabsha o Moulobad Birodhi Protibad Shondhya" was held at the Teachers-Students Centre (TSC) on DU campus on Saturday evening.
Cultural organisations of the university participated in the programme with songs, recitations, mimicry among other performances.
"A quarter with vested interest is using religion to hurt the spirit of Bangladesh's independence. We think that a cultural awakening is the best weapon against such fundamentalist forces," said Tanvir Hasan Saikat, an organiser of the event and a former member of Chhatra League and Ducsu.
Mentioning the vandalism on a sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Kushtia today, speakers at the event said, "On this day Bangladesh was named, and on this very day the anti-liberation forces are trying to lift their heads up capitalising on religion and fundamentalism. We strongly protest this."
Meanwhile, Muktijuddho Moncho on Saturday brought out a torch-procession protesting the vandalism incident.
