Rice traders detained for an hour a magistrate of a mobile court led by him as it fined some of their fellows for selling rice in plastic bags instead of jute ones at Bheramarket in Chaktai-Khatunganj of Chittagong city yesterday.

Owners of Kamal Brothers, Mazeda Trading, and Amanat Trading were fined Tk 4,000 each and Hazi Bodiur Rahman and Sons, and RB Trading Tk 3,000 each.

The traders said they asked the court to fine the mills from where they had to buy rice in such bags.

Witnesses said Lutfor Rahman was held from 2:00pm to 3:00pm.

On information, they rescued the magistrate, said Md Mohsin, officer-in-charge of Bakalia Police Station.

Later, the fine was realised following a meeting among the rice traders' association's leaders, police and the court at 4:00pm, said Omar Azam Chowdhury, general secretary of Chaktai Rice Traders' Association.
