Unb, Dhaka

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday called upon Dhaka city dwellers to be more judicious about using civic amenities, including water, electricity and gas.

Addressing the foundation stone laying ceremony of Dhaka Wasa Padma (Jashaldia) water treatment plant construction (phase-1) project at a hotel in the capital, Hasina sought cooperation of the city dwellers in making Dhaka a better place to live especially for the next generation.

The estimated cost of the project is Tk 3,508 crore, including the loan assistance of Tk 2,413 crore from Chinese Exim Bank.

The prime minister underscored the need for increasing the use of surface water and decreasing the use of underground water to protect the environment.

She requested all concerned to protect the natural sources of water, including canals, haors and rivers for saving the ecological balance.

The rivers surrounding Dhaka city will be dredged and cleaned up while water will be brought from Jamuna to Buriganga for purification, she added.
