American missionary Father JS Peixotto dies in Dhaka

American missionary and noted educationist Father JS Peixotto died this morning at Moreau House in Dhaka's Rampura at the age of 87.

He served at Notre Dame for more than 50 years, 23 years as Principal. He had been serving as treasurer at Notre Dame University before his death.

Jyoti F Gomes, Director at St Joseph International School, told The Daily Star that Father Peixotto had been suffering from heart ailments and received treatment both in Bangladesh and Thailand.

In December, he was infected with Covid-19 and was admitted at Square Hospital. He, however, recovered and was staying at Moreau House, a residence of the Holy Cross Congregation that Father Peixotto belonged to.

This morning, the staff at the Moreau House knocked on his door but there was no response.

Doctor was called in around 9:00am when the priest was found dead, Jyoti F Gomes said.

His body will be brought to Notre Dame College and University Campus at Arambagh, Motijheel at 3:00pm and Ramna Cathedral at 6:00pm.

At 9:00pm tomorrow, Father Peixotto's body will be taken to Tejgaon Holy Rosary Church before his burial at a graveyard of the Holy Cross Congregation at Bhadun in Pubail under Joydebpur, Gazipur.
