Four sweetmeat shops in the capital's Jatrabari and Kadamtali were fined Tk 9.5 lakh by a mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) for preparing and marketing food in an "unhygienic environment".

Executive Magistrate Md Sarwoer Alam conducted the raid from 10:30am to 2:30pm and fined Ross Ltd at Jatrabari Tk 6 lakh, Aid Banaful Mistannya Bhandar Tk 1 lakh, Sreenagar Vikrampur Mistannya Bhandar Tk 1.5 lakh and Bhagyakul Vikrampur Mistannya Bhandar Tk 1 lakh.

Sarwoer told The Daily Star that the shops have been threatened with tougher action if conditions did not improve in 15 days.

The court, assisted by Rab-10 personnel and Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution, found water used for preparing sweetmeats being taken directly from WASA supply lines, date-expired food colours and employees working with bare hands.
