A Chittagong court yesterday awarded death penalty to four people for killing a five-year-old boy after abduction while another court sentenced five people to life-term imprisonment for abducting a girl.

In the first incident, the four convicts -- Faruque, 25, Idris Mia, 28, Anwar, 23 and Sujan, 22, -- were also fined Tk 5,000 each. Of them, Sujan is absconding.

According to the case statement, the convicts abducted Yasin Arafat Abir, son of Reaz Uddin for ransom from Halishahar area while he was playing in a field nearby his house on December 17, 2012.

Later, they strangled the boy as he started shouting while they were taking him to Alankar area by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and left the body on the road in Nagordola area of Sitakunda upazila.

In another incident, the five convicts -- Rahima Begum of Banshkhali, Rokhsana, Mamunur Rashid, Jalal Uddin and Karim Dakat of Kutubdiya -- were fined Tk 50,000 each with the jail term.

Of them, Mamunur Rashid is in jail while others are on the run.

According to the case statement, the convicts abducted Fariya Afrin Oishi, 5, from in front of her residence in Chandgaon area in the city on January 27 this year and demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom over the phone.

Later, following a case filed by the girl's father Jahed Hossain, police rescued her from Rahima's house in Khutukkhali of Banshkhali upazila on February 2.
