168 fishermen held for defying seasonal ban on hilsa catching
Bangladesh Coast Guard members yesterday arrested 168 fishermen in the Bay of Bengal near Sangu gas field area and seized 3,080kg of hilsa, worth Tk 24.64 lakh, which they caught defying the ongoing temporary ban on hilsa fishing.
The government has imposed the ban from September 25 to October 9 for safe spawning and protection of mother hilsa.
All the seized stuff, including 24,000 meters of fishing nets, worth Tk 12 lakh, and 12 trawlers, were handed over to the fisheries department. Meanwhile, a mobile court sentenced 161 of the arrestees to 15 days' imprisonment.
