The second consignment of wheat imported from the United States under a government-to-government arrangement reached Chattogram port today.

According to a press release from the food ministry, a vessel named MV Clipper Isadora carried 57,203 tonnes of wheat.

The shipment is part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) recently signed between the Directorate General of Food and the US Department of Agriculture, under which Bangladesh will import a total of 220,000 tonnes of wheat.

The government inked the deal to reduce the bilateral trade deficit, which was in Bangladesh’s favour, and to secure lower tariffs from the Trump administration on Bangladesh’s exports.

The food ministry said that samples from the consignment are undergoing quality checks.

Of the total shipment, 34,320 tonnes will be unloaded at Chattogram port, while the remaining 22,443 tonnes will be discharged at Mongla port.
