Another consignment of 58,457 tonnes of wheat from the United States has arrived at Mongla port.

The vessel MV CALYPSO N, carrying the shipment from the US, reached the port’s outer anchorage, according to a press release issued today. Sampling and testing of the wheat on board have already been completed, and necessary arrangements have been made for its rapid unloading, the release said.

The consignment was imported under a cash purchase agreement signed in line with a memorandum of understanding between the governments of the United States and Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has already begun importing wheat from the US on a government-to-government (G2G) basis. So far, 467,884 tonnes of wheat imported under two G2G agreements have arrived in the country.

The country’s total wheat demand is approximately 70 lakh tonnes, while domestic production is around 10 lakh tonnes. To meet the shortfall, the remaining wheat is imported from abroad through both government and private channels.
