The Department of English and Modern Languages (DEML) at North South University is proud to announce the launch of its inaugural Certificate Course in Creative Writing, commencing in Spring 2026. This six-week intensive program is designed to cultivate the next emerging literary voices by providing a structured, mentor-led environment that emphasises Bangladesh’s rich cultural narratives.

Aimed at beginners and emerging writers, the course addresses a growing need for formal creative guidance. It offers a supportive space for individuals drawn to writing to explore and hone their craft.

Participants will explore fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction under the guidance of experienced DEML faculty alongside renowned guest writers from the Bangladeshi literary community: translator, critic, and academic Kaiser Haq, and author of In the Light of What We Know (2014), Zia Haider Rahman.

A distinctive feature of the curriculum is its focus on empowering writers to draw meaningfully from personal and communal experiences, with particular attention to Bangladeshi cultural, social, and historical contexts. This approach ensures that participants not only learn various writing techniques but also develop an authentic voice that resonates with local and global audiences. This initiative underscores NSU's commitment to expanding its liberal arts education and fostering creativity and critical expression within Bangladesh's literary landscape.

The course is open for enrollment to both NSU and non-NSU participants from January 1 to 27, 2026. Prospective participants can apply by scanning the QR code available on the official course poster, which contains comprehensive details regarding the course schedule and application process.

Participants who successfully complete the course will be awarded a certificate in recognition of their creative development and commitment. In a comment given to Star Books and Literature, Zia Haider Rahman said about the short course, "I'm very excited to be working with students". Kaiser Haq states, "It is inspiring to find young people who are interested to learn more about the art of poetry."
