'Robber' killed in 'shootout'

A suspected robber was killed during a shootout with police at Bhairab Bridge area in Bhairab upazila of Kishoreganj district early yesterday.

The victim was identified as Md Sohagh, 23, son of Mohammad Ali of village Bhairab Dakhhinpara.

On information that a gang of robbers in Bhairab Bridge area were preparing to commit a robbery, a police team led by officer-in-charge of Bhairab Police Station Muklesur Rahman raided the area around 3.30am, said Mohammad Ali Zinnah, officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Bhairab Police Station.

Sensing police presence the alleged robbers fired some 30 round of bullets on the police team, the OC said, and the police retaliated with 20 rounds of gunshots.

After the gunfight police found a wounded Sohagh and rushed him to Bhairab Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead, said the OC.

He had bullet wounds on his back. Shohag's boy was sent to Kishoreganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Two policemen - Assistant Sub Inspector Habibullah and Constable Abdul Wahab - sustained bullet wounds in their legs and hands. They were admitted to the local health complex.

Police recovered one pipe gun, one chopper, a knife and one bullet from the spot.

A case has been lodged in this regard with the local police station.
