Police said to have shot dead an alleged drug trader after "he attacked and injured four of them with a machete" during a raid on his house in Rajshahi city early yesterday.

Afzal Hossain, in his early 30s, was declared dead at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where an autopsy would be performed, Motihar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Humayun Kabir told The Daily Star.

Assistant Commissioner Sushanto Chandra Roy and constables Nayem, Shujan and Fatema were undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Police Lines Hospital for injuries on their right hand, he claimed.

The machete was seized and it could not be ascertained whether there was anyone or any drugs inside the house as the team was preoccupied with the injured, he added. Afzal is accused in a case filed over drug trade, he said.

A 15-member police team knocked on the front door of Afzal's house in Dasmari Satbaria around 2:00am and the accused came out swinging, said the OC, adding that they fired five shotgun rounds.
