A suspected drug peddler was killed in a "shootout" with police in Pabna's Santhia upazila early yesterday.

Abdul Alim, 35, was a resident of Rasulpur village in the upazila, said Goutam Kumar, additional superintendent of police in Pabna.

Acting on a tip-off that a group of drug peddlers had taken shelter somewhere in Khoyerbagan area, a police team raided the area around 2:00am, he said.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on them, forcing them to retaliate that eventually triggered a gunfight.

Later, police found Alim with a bullet injury and took him to Pabna Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, the official said, adding that they recovered a firearm, two bullets, a machete and 100 yaba pills from his possession

Two policemen were injured during the incident and they were admitted to Santhia Upazila Health Complex, Gautam added.
