3 held with 11kg gold at Benapole

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh yesterday arrested three people in Jashore’s Benapole upazila for trying to smuggle gold worth around Tk 6.60 crore into India.

The arrestees are Jahidul Islam, 38, and Yakub Ali, 28, from Jashore’s Sharsa upazila, and Dilwar Hossain 23, from Cumilla’s Daudkandi upazila, said Lt Colonel Selim Reza, commanding officer at BGB Battalion-49.  

BGB men intercepted a brand new Toyota Premio carrying the three in Natunhat area on Jashore-Benapole highway early yesterday, Selim said at a press briefing yesterday. 

Searching the car and their bodies, BGB men recovered 98 gold bars weighing 11 kilogrammes, the official said, adding that the three were on their way to Jashore’s Putkhali border through which they would smuggle the gold bars. 

BGB also seized the car, which is owned by one Md Iman from Putkhali village, the BGB CO said, adding that Iman is also the kingpin of the smuggling syndicate and was sued along with the three arrestees in a case filed with Jashore’s Kotwali Police Station. 

Later, the arrestees were handed to over to police, the BGB official said.
