A man was killed in what police claim was a "gunfight" between them and him and his cohorts in Brahmanbaria's Chandidar area around midnight on Tuesday.

Police also claim that Ibrahim Mia, 35, son of late Shomraz Mia of Latuamora village, died after his associates mistakenly shot him.

Three bullets and three sharp weapons were recovered from the scene and police afterwards arrested 15 people at the village.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mohiuddin told The Daily Star that the group fired shots at a police team in a bid to free an arrestee and police fired 18 shots in self-defence.

The police team was returning to Kasba Police Station after arresting Ibrahim's wife Renuara Begum on discovering six kilogrammes of cannabis in their house around 11:00pm, he said.

Ibrahim died on the spot and his associates fled, said the OC, adding that the body was sent to the Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

There was a gaping wound on the deceased's chest.
