Syed Hasan Imam turns 86 today
Freedom fighter and cultural personality Syed Hasan Imam began his acting career in 1961. His first theatrical release was the film, Dharapat. Acting on television for over 50 years, Hasan Imam is also a dedicated theatre artiste. Over the years, he has won several prestigious awards, including the Ekushey Padak (1999), Independence Award (2016) and Bangladesh National Film Award for Lifetime Achievement (2014), among others. Today marks the artiste’s 86th birth anniversary. On a candid chat with The Daily Star, the actor looks back on his life.

Artistes, teachers and students express solidarity with the ‘Where is Kajol?’ movement
A group of musicians have expressed their solidarity with the ‘Where is Kajol?’ movement, which has been demanding the release of Shafiqul Islam Kajol, a photojournalist who has been imprisoned in a case filed under the Digital Security Act. Several artistes performed and raised their voices to press home the demand in three days of a weeklong online programme, titled ‘Kajoler Mukti Ebong Mukto Chinta’. The programme has been airing live from the movement’s Facebook page, starting from July 21. The show, which will end on July 27, is organised by Kajol’s son, Monorom Polok.

US Embassy launches song to honour COVID-19 frontline workers
The US Embassy, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), recently released a song, titled Joy Hobe to recognise and thank frontline workers who deliver essential services amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the outbreak in March, they have been working tirelessly round the clock and risking their own lives, helping people to stay home and prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus disease. This USAID-funded initiative was undertaken by ABC Radio (FM 89.6) as a tribute to these real-life superheroes.

Shahiduzzaman Selim’s upcoming Eid ventures
Renowned actor Shahiduzzaman Selim is set to star in a number of upcoming television productions for Eid Ul Azha, for different channels. One of the projects, Babara Shob Pare, also features Shatabdi Wadud and Golam Farida Chanda among others. According to Selim, the plot revolves around the struggles and sacrifices of a father. His other Eid ventures include Baap re Baap and Abbas.
Selim explains that the pandemic has made life tough. However, as most industries have resumed working, so has television shoots. “Cast and crew members have to earn a living. We have started working, maintaining all safety measures,” he adds.
